Bridging Two Worlds

Stepping
across the threshold
leaving
one reality, embracing another –
if only for a few moments

Inside
a fan mutely, slowly
bathes the room in a slight breeze
long, slender blades
dip (ever so slightly) as if to caress
my husband resting in the bed below
were it not for the four posters standing sentry

Today
a rectangular patch of
sun bears witness to the day –
cat will stretch out and claim it for his own
perhaps guarding the entry? lest
an interloper (me included)
disturbs the silence

On the deck
there is also a breeze and
cardinals, chickadees – a titmouse
(flitting back and forth from
feeder to nearby trees and shrubs)
a small woodpecker, upside down
searching for bugs on a tulip poplar

Red tailed hawk and
osprey with its distinctive cry
sail above the treetops
even Dog is suddenly busy
studying a carpenter bee

On this side of the door, life never pauses

The grape vines are budding
a rosemary replanted
the lemon and lime outside again till fall
only the deck planters await

Decision time: flowers or vegetables?
