Unwanted

Before I walked inside
it looked ordered, pleasant
I might make a difference, if small

They knew
I could never stay
no matter how bright, sunny, nice, agreeable
(unlike the cottages
tidy and white on the outside
– inside, dark and sad)

In the cottages
small hands still waited to be held
little voices to laugh
eager for time in the sun

The big building had
bright rooms
a few children
alone together behind a locked door
unaware we were there?
sitting in emptiness
no hands or arms
just little heads sticking out
necks broken
staring at the black and white television
hanging from the ceiling
