Sticky notes
that framed
my computer fill
the waste basket – one
by one – like fall’s last
leaves dropping from trees
(the business year is winding down)

Out back
little jenny-wren
has taken up residence
under the patio table, darting
for cover when we open the door
well sited near the feeder, yet
nearly in the path of the builder’s crew

She prefers
winter sheltered by
towering tulip poplars and
life at wood’s edge aboard the boat
(moved off site, it has been supplanted
by tarp-covered mounds of woodland loam)

Deer and fox forage
oblivious to the black silt fence
snaking from behind garage, past lumber
mud, and the addition – finally ending
out front at strategically placed straw bales

similarly, design and permit
processes also meandered
through the spring, past
National Lobster Day in June –
paid no heed to the juvenile pompano
playing in Pensacola Bay in early September

Construction finally began in November

Documenting progress
with my iPhone (distracted, unfocused)
I wonder what jenny thinks
(of her new quarters) as
she announces and celebrates each moment

May we also
recognize what is truly important
during this season. Merry Christmas!
